Rouget de L’Isle, Claude-Joseph: Sent to Strasbourg to fight against the Austrian-Prussian armies, this soldier and musician was the author of the score Chant de guerre pour l’armée du Rhin. Better known as the Marseillaise, this song definitively became France’s national anthem in 1879.
