Mirabeau, Honoré-Gabriel Riqueti de

Deputy, 1749 - 1791

Honoré Gabriel Riquetti, Count of Mirabeau (1749-1791), Writer, Politician and French Revolutionary

Mirabeau, Honoré-Gabriel Riqueti de: Prior to 1789, he was in favor of abolishing the slave trade and forged links with revolutionaries from many different countries. Born into nobility, but elected by the third estates to the Estates General, he became a hero when he refused to evacuate the Menus-Plaisirs room on June 23, 1789. As a deputy, he engaged in double-dealing by secretly informing the king. His death in 1791 was a national event, before his legend crumbled when his papers were discovered.
