Machine Proposed to the National Assembly for the Execution of Criminals by Mr. Guillotin; Prototype Manufactured by Tobias Schmidt

Schmidt, Tobias: From a German-speaking country, this harpsichord maker developed a machine that has been used since the 16th century in Europe to cut off the heads of those sentenced to death. In France, starting during the Revolution, it was given the name “guillotine,” named after the physician and deputy Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, famous for having imposed this procedure as a method of execution.
