Portrait of Vincent Ogé (1755-1791), Young Colonist from Saint-Domingue

Ogé, Vincent: Born into a free family of color in Saint Domingue, Vincent Ogé established the American Colonists Society and campaigned with the Assembly in favor of equality for people of color. Faced with deputies’ hesitation and refusals, he launched an insurrection in Saint Domingue at the end of the 1790s. Handed over by the Spanish who owned the eastern part of the island where he was then hiding, he was executed by being broken on the wheel in February 1791.
