Necker, Jacques

Minister, 1732 - 1804

Jacques Necker (1732-1804), Minister of State, General Director of Finances

Necker, Jacques: A former Director of Finances under the Ancien Régime and very popular among patriots, Necker was recalled by Louis XVI during the preparations for the Estates Generals. His expulsion on July 12, 1789 initiated the insurrections that would end with the storming of the Bastille two days later. Recalled, he tried to reabsorb the public debt before resigning in September 1790, too opposed to the ideas of the Revolution.
