Bernard-René Jourdan de Launay (1740-1789), Warden of the Bastille

Launay, Bernard-René Jourdan de: In 1789, Launay was the governor of the royal prison of the Bastille. It was he who defended the fortress against insurgents on July 14th. After ordering his soldiers to fire into the crowd, he was killed near the Hôtel de Ville where insurgents were in the process of taking him in order to turn him over to the authorities.
