Latude, Jean-Henri Masers, otherwise known as the Knight of: Imprisoned in the Bastille for having invented a fake plot against Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress, Latude succeeded in passing himself off as a martyr of the absolute monarchy, as well as a hero, by dramatizing his incarceration and many escapes. He was celebrated in 1789 as a precursor of the Revolution.
