L'Épée, Charles-Michel de, otherwise known as Father: The Father of the Deaf died on December 23, 1789. Two years later, the National Assembly hailed him as a “benefactor of humanity,” due to the work that he had accomplished in his Parisian institute dedicated to the deaf and mute.
