Hébert, Jacques-René

Journalist and member of the Paris Commune, 1757 - 1794

Portrait of Jacques René Hébert (1757-1794), Journalist and Politician

Hébert, Jacques-René: A satirical writer, Hébert was known for his newspaper Le Père Duchesne, one of the most widely read by the sans-culottes, in which he defended a democratic journalism for the people. He was a radical republican: a member of the Commune of Paris, he strongly opposed both the Girondins, whom he judged to be too moderate, and the Montagnards, whom he accused of being too removed from the people’s preoccupations. He was executed on March 24, 1794.
