Guillotin, Joseph-Ignace

Physician and deputy, 1738 - 1814

Portrait of Joseph-Ignace Guillotin (1738-1814), Physician and Deputy of Paris

Guillotin, Joseph-Ignace: This physician was elected to the Estates Generals and became a deputy of the Constituent Assembly. On December 1, 1789, he became known for participating in the debates on reforming the penal code. Inspired by machines already used in Europe, he proposed that the death penalty be henceforth enacted in the same way for all those sentenced to die, while making sure to avoid any useless suffering. The guillotine was born!
