Conté, Nicolas-Jacques: Portraitist, engineer and professor, Conté directed the Ecole nationale aérostatique of Meudon during the Revolution. Inventor of a pencil with artificial lead, he became one of the first professors at the Conservatoire des arts et métiers: he embodied the desire for education and the popularization of knowledge during the Revolution.
