Chavannes, Jean-Baptiste

Free person of color and revolutionary from Saint-Domingue, 1748 - 1791

Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Chavannes (1748-1791), Freed Slave

Chavannes, Jean-Baptiste: Veteran of the American war for independence, Chavannes was a former emancipated slave. In 1790, he and Vincent Ogé started a rebellion in Saint Domingue: the Revolution still had not ended discrimination against people of color in the colonies. And like him, he too was sentenced to death by being broken on the wheel and died on February 25, 1791.
