Brissot de Warville, Jacques-Pierre: A founding member of the Society of the Friends of Black People (1788), in favor of abolishing the slave trade, close with American revolutionaries, Brissot founded the newspaper Le Patriote français. Elected deputy, in 1792 he became the leader of the “Brissotins” or “Girondins.” However, these moderate republicans were considered to be anti-revolutionary: after a collective trial, he was executed on October 30, 1793.
