Bonaparte, Napoléon: In 1793, this Corsican patriot and admirer of Robespierre succeeded in taking Toulon back from the English. Promoted to a general, he forcefully repressed the Parisian insurrection of October 5, 1795 before conducting a victorious military campaign in Italy (1796) and then Egypt (1798), wherefrom he returned the following year in order to establish a more authoritarian and conservative republic: the Consulate. In 1804, he became emperor.
