Madeleine Rose Bertin (1747-1813), Milliner for Marie-Antoinette

Bertin, Rose: With a shop in the Palais-Royal, Rose Bertin became the most famous female clothes retailer of her time when Marie-Antoinette started ordering from her. She amassed a considerable fortune : she dressed several princesses and queens of Europe or, in France, several famous figures like La Fayette. However, she remained associated with the court’s excessive luxury: after the execution of Marie-Antoinette on October 16, 1793 she was exiled to London. Having returned to France some time later, she never succeeded in reviving her business.
